Join the EU X LATAM Food Protein Challenge

EIT Food is committed to supporting the growth and development of agrifood innovations that are helping to make the entire food system more sustainable, healthy, and trusted. Thus, EIT Food and Food Tech Hub Latam have joined forces to help disruptive European agrifood startups in the alternative protein space to expand to Latin America. This unique access-to-market opportunity is designed to help startups fast-track their innovation by unlocking industry connections and receiving access to some of the world’s most vibrant startup ecosystems. This is not a training program but a structured soft-landing format to facilitate expansion efforts to Latin America!

Who should join the EU X LATAM Food Protein Challenge 2022?

This call for applications is open to all startup companies working on production methods and innovations in the domain of alternative protein foods. Relevant solutions will allow the food industry to develop products, based on alternative proteins, that are tasty, healthy and affordable.

Technologies include: Plant-based innovations, taste & texture modifications, crop extraction, food colouring, clean label, cellular agriculture, precision fermentation and more.

More specifically, we are looking for impactful startups and scaleups that adhere to the following criteria:

  • Your company is looking to expand into the LATAM market.
  • Your company is registered in the EU member states or associated countries.
  • You are working on a solution in the challenge domain detailed above.
  • You have successfully completed a proof of concept backed by data.
  • You have less than 49 employees (excluding interns or contractors).
  • You have generated less than 10 million euros of revenue per year.
  • Your last funding round was Series B or less.
  • You are open to collaborate with industry and looking to scale your technology.

What’s in it for the startups selected?

  • 2 weeks to visit multiple innovation ecosystems and food tech research institutes based in Brazil, such as Embrapa, Food Technology Institute (ITAL), and Luis de Queiroz University (one of the most reliable in Agriculture worldwide).
  • Meetings with local companies (e.g. BRF, Bühler, Givaudan)
  • Contact with Brazilian Food Association, which has more than 150 food companies
  • Contact Brazilian investors
  • Contact Brazilian Cooperatives
  • Meet with the Secretary of Innovation at the Ministry of Agriculture
  • Meet lawyers and advisors on how to install a company in Brazil
  • Visiting the ecosystem in Buenos Aires and Santiago do Chile (depending on the company´s interest)
  • Travel costs will be covered EIT Food

In the form, please specify what makes your technology special as well as your plans to expand to the LATAM market. The answer will be read by our selection committee, thus the more specific your explanations, the more likely they will want to support you in your expansion efforts.

September 11th: Submission deadline at 23:59 CET.

Starting Oct 1st: Announcement of companies selected for second evaluation round (30-minute online meeting).
